0. Introduction.

Hello again everybody, and welcome to the May newsletter!
Yes it is the MAY newsletter, and it IS still May... everywhere in the world!
(I checked)

So no complaining that this might as well be the June newsletter, because it's not
June and we have strict standards over here about when the newsletter goes out! For
example, it must still be the month listed in the subject. And on that standard we
are unwavering.

In fact, I promise that June's newsletter is going to come out much sooner in the
month. The plan is actually to get it out next Friday, June 2nd.. quite possibly
the earliest release of a newsletter ever! I don't want to hear any complaints about
the newsletters being too close together either (or that nothing's happened in
between them worth writing about), you've gone far too long without one at all (and
during that time, nothing to complain about) so this should be a welcome blast of
hot, sweaty air!

It seems like this newsletter's theme is complaints.. I hate that!

1. DHSOTM Round-up.

Okay dokay, it's time to announce the May winner of our DreamHost Site of the Month
contest! Just in time to hand over the crown to the winner for June! Enjoy it while
it lasts... and no complaints!

The winner for May 2000 is http://www.abandon.org/ a personal home page with purty
purty design! Admittedly, there were some sites with higher average votes, but
Abandon.org was the highest vote getter submitted before April 1st, 2000 (remember,
this IS still the May newsletter). Don't worry, one of those later-submitted sites
will win soon enough.. so spend the next few days and long weekend (in America at
least, land of Memorials!) perusing the site and giving it some much-deserved

Don't forget to submit your site and/or vote for others' at the web panel form!
And if you do forget, I don't want to hear no lip from you!

2. Suggestion Round-up.

As for suggestions, I have to say outright that we haven't been able to do much in
terms of implementing them, and we'd like to apologize for that. The reason for this
and a good part of why the newsletter is so late (and a reason for a lot of the
complainy-sounding suggestions on the board) is because we've been working hard on
DreamHost 2000 and it's even begun beta testing by real users such as yourselves.
We're devoting almost all our resources towards getting this done, as it will forever
make the implementation of new suggestions easier! We know it's been said before,
and we hate as much as you do how long this whole thing has taken, but we're in the
home stretch now and a weight is slowly lifting off our collective shoulders. Ahhhhh.

Okay yes, so as for this month's winner of the $50 suggestion prize, it goes to Jason
Olshefsky for suggesting more often reloading of our servers (rather than twice a
day). We're pleased to make the change that all of our servers now reload hourly,
instead! That means on average 1/12th the old wait for changes to your domains,
aliases, users, auto-responders, and mx records to take effect! And if you are the
sort of person who _likes_ to wait, well then I guess complain to Jason!

3. Second Visor Contest Winner!

Don't forget our current giveaway running from now until the end of the
year! We're giving away one Handspring Visor a month (they're palm-pilot
compatible organizers that come in DreamHost blue!) to some lucky guy or
gal, as per the official rules at http://www.dreamhost.com/contest/

We haven't announced to the winner yet who they are, and we do know it is
somebody who is receiving this newsletter. So therefore, keep reading to
see if it is YOU who won this month's Visor (a $269 value)!

And the winner is... Mike Maday! Way to go, Mike! We'll be emailing you
soon to verify your shipping info and make sure everything is nice and

Keep on referring people and keep on adding services and keep on sending
index cards to up your chances in our great Visor giveaway!

I just realized that this is going to be a regular section of the
newsletter for the next 7 months, so I've rewritten it in a way to make it
easy to cut and paste for next time without much modification! Heck, maybe
instead of spending all this time writing the newsletter each month I
should spend it writing a script that generates newsletters...

4. Beta testers thanked!

I mentioned in part 2 that we started the DreamHost 2000 beta test this month, and
so addded the first 50 beta testers to the new system. They've been trying it out
and giving us invaluable input on bugs and the like and we'd like to just say right
here how much we appreciate it! We'll keep working on improving things and clarifying
stuff and polishing things up!

We also would like to mention that probably within the next week we'll begin adding
more people from the list of 350 interested applicants we got into the beta test..
soo if you sent in a request to test and haven't been accepted yet, you might be
hearing from us soon (it's a fifo queue).

Thanks again, dudettes and dudes!

5. DreamHost Contracting Survey!

One thing we've always gotten a lot of here at DreamHost has been requests from
people for help on their web site or in some way computer or internet related
project. We've always wanted to help in one way or another (hey usually they're even
willing to PAY), but most of the time we haven't been able to. We just haven't had
the time or resources to help people any more than maybe giving a little sage advice
(not necessarily from Sage).

Well, we'd like that to change! And so we're currently in the process of setting up
some sort of DreamHost Contracting service which would be somewhat separate from the
Hosting aspect of things, in the sense that it would be for things beyond the scope
of our regular customer service. The current range of services we're considering
offering is rather broad, and so we'd like to ask the favor of some help from you
guys, our complaining home audience!

Basically, we would like to know better what sort of services YOU guys are most
interested in our help with! To figure that out, we're asking that you could send out
a quick email to projects@dreamhost.com outlining any sort of projects you've
thought about doing but never had the time or expertise to pursue. The answers to
these questions would be very helpful!

What is the basic level of the project? (for example: basic html/javascript,
installing a custom cgi script, writing a one-time custom script, redesigning a site,
making an entire interactive database-driven site, basic site-maintenance on a
recurring basis, advisory/planning service, or even a corporate intranet and on-site
set up of an office network).

What is the general idea behind the project? (you don't have to give away any
specifics or anything like that if it's of a sensitive nature at all!)

When were you hoping to have it started?

How long do you envision the project taking?

How were you planning to handle completion of the project?

Would you consider using DreamHost Contracting services if they were available?

How much would it have to cost for you to use our services?

So if you were thinking about something like that please go ahead and send us an
email at projects@dreamhost.com and we'll be ever so grateful and won't complain a
bit no matter what!
