DreamHost Now Hosting 500.000+ Domains

May 16th, 2007

500,000 Domains Hosted!

Hurray… DreamHost is now hosting more than 500,000 domains according to WebHosting.Info. With an average of 700 new domains a day since they passed 400,000 it has taken less than 5 months to reach this new milestone.

Domain Stats

To celebrate this event DreamHost is currently having a crazy promo: A Crazy Domain Insane package with 500 GB storage space, 5 TB bandwidth, 5 free domains and a $50 discount. That’s $69.40 for the first year of hosting if you sign up for the yearly plan.

Unfortunately DreamHost scooped me this time and got the story first. They even started to announce winners of my contest?! Talk about stealing my thunder.

Squirrel Blogger

So how did it happen that the lazy guys at DreamHost got the story first? Well, I’m almost sure they killed by cronjobs watching the WebHosting.Info site, delayed all my emails and infiltrated my army of squirrels I had paid to update the blog the second the news was broken!

Josh in Squirrel Disguise

Luckily I snapped a picture of Josh in his squirrel disguise, and will try to use it to extort him for a few extra prizes. You better listen Josh or I’ll break your nuts!

Contest Result

As most of you would know, we started a contest just before New Year, where the object was to guess when DreamHost would pass 500,000 hosted domains. 108 dreamhosters submitted their guesses in time for a chance to win an iPod shuffle.

The stats from WebHosting.Info shows 496,673 domains for May 7th and 500,796 for May 14th. Interpolating these numbers shows that DreamHost reached 500,000 domains on Sunday, May 13, 2007.

iPod ShuffleNo one guessed the correct day, but there was two guesses on the day before and four guesses on the day after. Later today I will announce the winner of the drawing between the six guesses on either May 12 or May 14.

P.S: No animal was harmed in the making of this blog post.

The Angry Spam Song

April 12th, 2007

angry-man1.jpgJust found this piece of gold…

You might remember the voicemail from an angry customer raving about DreamHost spamming him from the post YOU C@#KS#CK’N SPAMMERS! at DreamHost’s Blog.

Rob Rohan has now created a song based on the voicemail:

I was wandering around the web and saw this posting about a guy who was upset about receiving some spam. The spam was seemingly coming from that host though they said it wasn’t their fault (as most people know you can fake the from address).

Anyway, the guy called and yelled at them, and they put the phone messages online. I was in need of some non-coding distraction today so I made a GarageBand song of the guy getting upset. I haven’t been a practicing musician for quite a while so don’t judge it too hard.

It has some dirty words in it so if that’s not your cup of tea, I’d pass on it.

Without further ado, the AngrySpam song.

Major DOS Attack Against DreamHost’s Nameservers

April 8th, 2007

DreamHost is currently experiencing intermittent DNS outages on all nameservers, which is causing problems with both websites and email.

It appears they are the victims of an Easter Denial-of-Service attack against their nameservers.

In October and November last year DreamHost had several minor DOS attacks against one server at a time (Selma, Whopper and Jalapa), but this seems more severe like the DDoS attack in December 2005, since it’s affecting the entire network.

Backup your Mac or PC to DreamHost

April 4th, 2007

Michael Lee from Addison Road has written a great tutorial about how you can use the vast amount of storage space on your DreamHost account to backup your Mac.

Part 1 of the tutorial shows how to create a new user with shell access, how to enable SSH access to the server without having to supply a password and how to use rsync from the terminal to create a backup of your home folder on the server.

Part 2 of the tutorial shows you how to create an AppleScript that runs rsync automatically and how to setup iCal to run the AppleScript on a daily basis.

Latest In Tech explains how to do the same on Windows with cwRsync (a package of Rsync and Cygwin).

Free DreamHost Hosting Plan for RegisterFly Refugees

March 18th, 2007

RegisterFly a New Jersey based domain registrar and web host has just lost their ICANN-accredited status after an investigation of fraud. The company was registrar for approximately 2,000,000 domain names held by about 900,000 customers and leaves a lot of these customers struggling. They all have to find a new registrar and possibly a new web host within the next two weeks.

To help these customers DreamHost is giving a full year of their fully featured Crazy Domain Insane hosting plan including a domain registration transfer and renewal for free (worth $119.40)!

From DreamHost’s website:

To help the struggling customers of RegisterFly (recently ICANN un-ccredited) DreamHost is letting anybody who has a domain currently registered through RegisterFly to transfer them to DreamHost absolutely free! You also get a year of our most-popular, fully-featured L1 hosting plan to boot! This offer is good for accounts with domain registrations previously with RegisterFly that sign up before March 31st, 2007 at 11:59 PM PDT only!

Make sure when signing up you choose the option for “I already own a domain, I want to host it AND transfer the registration for free!”, enter a domain currently registered via RegisterFly, and use the promo code “FLYAWAY” at the bottom!

The Fine Print:

  • This offer is for new customers only – those who do not have an active account with DreamHost.
  • If you sign up and forget to use the “FLYAWAY” promotional code, you WILL NOT receive the sale pricing (FREE). No amount of complaining will change this!
  • Domains and accounts may not be transferred from an existing DreamHost Web Hosting account to a “FLYAWAY” hosting plan.
  • We reserve the right to deny this sale pricing (FREE) to anyone at our discretion.
This sale will remain in effect until 11:59 PM PDT, March 31st, 2007.
  • At the end of 12 months, your account will be automatically extended at the current (non-discounted) rate. You will then be asked to pay for your account if you’d like to keep it. If you do not wish to continue at that time, you may close your account via our control panel.

OS X dashboard widget

Back in October DreamHost advertised a customer created DreamHost Status Widget for Yahoo! Widgets (Konfabulator). Back then a lot of Mac users was requesting a similar widget for Mac. Another DreamHost customer, Geoff, has now created such a widget. The OS X dashboard widget can be downloaded from his website.
