0. Introduction.

Sigh, there's nothing like writing the DreamHost December newsletter to
get you going in the morning. I'm still a bit groggy from last night's
merriment, but at least this thing is only going to be a tad bit late
this month. Better to get it out on the first of January than like the
third or fourth like last month!

What the.. HOLY SPIKED EGG NOG, my computer says it IS the fourth! Can
it be? It IS!

That's it, I have my first new year's resolution: No more 80 hours naps.

At least until February.

########################################################################
1. Sale Super-Successful: Stopping Suspended; Services Souped-up!

While I was a Viking the last four days, it looks like we completely
forgot to take down our super-crazy December triple-bandwidth sale! Now
that it's gone on so long, and since it was such a rip-roaring success,
we've decided to just go ahead and extend it a little bit: through
February 2005 (remember.. this is 2005 NOW!).

BUT THAT'S NOT ALL, is it? No, it's not. What good is triple-bandwidth
without triple-disk-space? That'd be like triple-peas without triple-
carrots, triple-laurel without triple-hardy, or even triple-jump without
shot put!

So, the sale continues, with the super addition of triple-disk-space for
all new shared hosting plans, FOREVER! And, just like last month, we
haven't forgotten you, our Happy Current DreamHost Customers either..
everybody who currently has shared hosting with us has just gotten their
disk space limits tripled as well! (Remember that if you've set your own
disk quota for any users, that number will stay where it is.. you'd have
to manually up it yourself. Just your overall plan quota has been
tripled.)

That puts us at the certifiably insane monthly levels of:

CDI: 120GB Bandwidth, 2400 MB Disk
SD: 144GB Bandwidth, 4800 MB Disk
CM: 192GB Bandwidth, 7680 MB Disk
SB: 264GB Bandwidth, 11040 MB Disk

No, you're not dreaming. You ARE a Viking. Maybe more of a web-hosting
Viking, with like a lot of disk space and bandwidth instead of oars and
a beard, but a Viking none the less!

########################################################################
2. New MySQL Panel!

Like that big smiley cat would always say to me while I drank tea with
the queen of hearts, "What good is triple disk space if you don't have a
new MySQL control panel to go with it?" To which I would always reply,
"Heffalumps and woozles, are very confusil, because they come in every
shape and size." And generally we'd just leave it at that.

But he did have a point. So that's why we've now got a totally redone
"Goodies > MySQL" area here:

      https://panel.dreamhost.com/?tree=goodies.mysql

Some of the nice new benefits:

One-step setup of a new MySQL database!
Databases are now created within 5-10 minutes!
The same username may now be used on different databases!
Ability to edit a user's password!
Perhaps a nicer layout with some cutesy graphics!

GO! Go and bask in the glory of unparalleled MySQL ease and power!
Finally your triple-disk space won't be for naught.

3. New Extra Web Security Feature!

In the last couple of days there were a number of times when I wished
I hadn't gone to school in just my underwear. I also wish I'd at least
have worn some other pair besides those stupid Spongebob "You've been
naughty" ones I love so much. If only there was some sort of new "Extra
Naked Security" feature I could have used to cut down on these incidents
somewhat.

Well there's not, and the sooner I face that fact, the sooner I'll get
out there and buy another pair of skivvies. But there IS at least a new
"Extra WEB Security" feature we've added for people using DreamHost
while awake!

You'll see the checkbox to enable it whenever you add a new domain,
or if you go to the "edit" link for a domain at the "Domains > Web"
area. Checking that box enables "Mod Security" on your domain, which you
can read more about here:

      http://www.modsecurity.org/

Basically what it does is block some of the more common attacks people
use against web sites. You know, exploits of commonly used web site
scripts and the like. We'll even update the rules for what's blocked
over time as more exploits come about! There are a very few specific web
applications that currently don't work with Mod Security on, so if you
decide to turn it on, check if any of your scripts break. The only ones
we know about so far are relatively obscure and are listed at:

      ?area=3040

So please feel free to give "Extra Web Security" a try.. you're just
lessening the chance of an embarrassing and humiliating website hack.
And, for personal reasons, I'll keep working on "Extra Naked Security".

4. Introducing Dreamhosters.com!

While cruising through the ionosphere, I noticed a funny thing. I could
see thousands of tiny dreamhost.com sub-domains from up there, stretched
across the entire North American continent, and even the world!

That was when I realized.. every dreamhost.com sub-domain is unique, and
precious. They must be honored and preserved!

And then there was that giant red furry tennis racket with a paycheck
for $2,042.13 made out to "Rob Daniels".

And then there was a booming voice that said, "let there be ERS".

And so: as of now, you can no longer create new dreamhost.com sub-
domains. Sorry, but we're saving the rest of them for machine names and
internal use. But you can instead get dreamhostERS.com sub-domains,
which are just about as spiffy, and every bit as cool, which is saying a
WHOLE LOT!

5. .LA Domain Promo: Buy One Get One FREE!

Like my recent nap, this seems to be the newsletter that refuses to end.

So, as a reward for your patience in getting this far, I'll let you in
on a little secret. If you register a .la domain between now and the end
of March you get a second one free (for one year)! Just go to:

      https://panel.dreamhost.com/la/signup.cgi

and enter the two domains you want! And please don't make fun of the
background on that page. It's a recurring theme from my dreams.

########################################################################
6. DHSOTM.

Have you ever had exactly the same dream multiple times? Like say three
times in three days? And then did it come true? If so, spooky. If not,
you have a very lame subconscious.

Well, I had a recurring dream during this last nap that this month's
DHSOTM winner would be a flash-based web site. And guess what? Spooky:

      http://www.americanritual.com/

This is a nice little site with photography and writings by a couple of
crazy kids out there chasing a dream as only crazy kids who host with
DreamHost can. Because hey, "We Host Your Dreams", right? Do we even use
that tag line anymore? It's amazing how misunderstood that tag line was.
I guess that's to be expected when you're years ahead of your time,
though. The world just wasn't ready for a tag line such as thee!

Have YOU got a site worthy of such adulation and praise on the virtual
pages of the DreamHost newsletter? If so, go:

      https://panel.dreamhost.com/?tree=home.dhsotm

If not, I recommend taking a nap.

########################################################################
Yawn,
Josh!

Was this newsletter a "nightmare"? Please, we've heard it all before..
just update your subscription preferences at:

       https://panel.dreamhost.com/id/?tab=contact

And you can rest easy knowing you won't be wasting another 15 minutes of
your life on my drivel!
