0. Introduction.

Welcome to the October 2004 Happy DreamHost Newsletter! Sorry for the
delay. I would have had it out yesterday, but there was something JUST
a little bit more important occupying my time. Something we've waited
for for a long time, something which has consequences across our great
nation and the entire world.

Hooray for the start of the NBA season! I don't think I could have
lasted much longer.. since the Red Sox won the world series a week ago
there's been hardly anything newsworthy going on *at all*! I'm just glad
all the news stations will finally have something to report about.
As I flipped through them before the games yesterday, I think they had
all decided to just use their air time to teach 3rd grade U.S. geography
or something. I can't believe there was just NOTHING worth reporting on.
I KNOW the states, thank you very much, so I just switched to ESPN and
awaited Detroit's stomping of Houston.

1. More Mailboxes! More Users!

To celebrate what will most likely be four more years of the Pistons'
reign over the rest of the league, we've just upped the number of
mailboxes and ftp/shell users that come with all our plans, to what
could only be described as "dynasty-level".

We've increased all mailbox limits TEN-FOLD, and all ftp/shell user
limits FIVE-FOLD! Wow! Never in our history has there been such a large
feature increase with such a small probable impact on people's actual
usage!

But hey, in early exit polls everybody was saying "the sixty mailboxes
you give us on CDI just aren't enough... we want SIX HUNDRED!!"

And remember, you don't have to do anything to get these new amounts..
we've already upped every current Happy DreamHost Customer's limits!

(See the new amounts at http://www.dreamhost.com/shared/comparison.html)

2. Dedicated Servers.. Now With Less Cost!

As self-proclaimed leaders of the free web hosting world, it's always
been important for us to keep our prices as close to free as possible!

Which is why we've just dropped the price on dedicated servers across
the board (except for people making over $200,000 a year... sorry!)

Now everybody (except bajillionaires like Ben Wallace) can get their own
"New Moon" Dedicated server with 512MB of ram and a P4 processor (not
some lame celeron!) for just $99/month!

We've changed everything around in fact.. come see how close to FREE the
free web hosting world can actually be:

3. New! Stop "Bandwidth Theft"!

For an NBA home opener "unprecedented turnout" is a good thing. Other
times, though, it can be mad. Like say when you've got a website with a
lot of cool graphics and/or media files that other sites like to link
to. Why is that bad? Because although we've got super-awesome the-best-
ever rock-out-to-the-moon bandwidth allotments and overage prices, it's
still possible to get totally bandwidth-jacked by somebody
surreptitiously linking directly to a file on your site from theirs!

But now, instead of just sitting idly by and hoping that we miscount
your usage data, you can do something about it!

We've revamped our Htaccess area to add a new "Link Protection" feature!
(We've also combined the WebDAV area in with the Htaccess area, please
don't be confused.) Now, instead of just enabling WebDAV or adding
password-protection to a directory of your site, you can also "Forbid
linking to files in this directory"! You can also set it to only block
certain file extensions, as well as open up access for some domains.

Anybody who tries to link to a file in a directory you've got protected
will instead get a nasty "FORBIDDEN" error (which you can customize)!

Take that, disenfranchised linkers!

4. Junk Mail Filter No Longer BETA!

For the last couple of weeks we've been really on the edge of whether or
not our beta junk mail filter was ready for prime-time. We were always
swinging back and forth between whether or not to do it, usually by just
a few points.

Finally last night it was decided, while watching the Pistons pass the
ball from one side of the court to another, to just go for it!

So hey, check it out at:

     https://panel.dreamhost.com/?tree=mail.junk

Our new spam and virus filter which actually works pretty well!

If the outcome of our decision on whether to keep this as beta or not
isn't the way you'd hoped, you should of course feel free to demand we
reconsider it over and over again until it is!

5. DHSOTM.

In unrelated news, the October DHSOTM winner is:

      http://www.gdbdp.com/upload_2_0/

Another flash-based portfolio site. Same old thing that's been winning
this contest for at least the last four years. Same old thing that's
going to keep winning for the next four.

      https://panel.dreamhost.com/?tree=home.dhsotm

is where you should go to make a change!

Yep thanks! I think I might run out and set up a thousand or so Pop3 accounts tonight! ;-)

Thanks for the junk mail filter. I only get about 10 spams a week compared to about 500. This is much more manageable.

Thanks for all of your work.
