0. Introduction.

Hello fellow DreamHostivians and welcome to the June 2002 Newsletter! I
apologize for it coming out in what most people would correctly identify
as July, but I do have a good excuse!

You see, I was actually really good this month and almost got the
newsletter sent early in the month. In fact, I _wrote_ this newsletter
on Monday, June 3rd! But I finished so late I decided not to send it
until the fourth. And then I promptly forgot about it! And what do you
know, before I knew it June was over (June being a short month) and I'd
never sent the newsletter! So today I quickly searched through my files,
found the newsletter, added this introduction, and sent it out!

Don't worry, even though this newsletter is four weeks old, everything
in it is still very relevant and important for you to read. Especially
this introduction.. and if you've read everything so far, you're off to
a good start!

1. Surprise For Summer!

Summer is just around the corner, and we here at DreamHost thought that
was something worth celebrating. So what have we decided to do? Well,
it's a secret! But suffice it to say we're going to give all you Happy
DreamHost customers a special treat on June 21st, the first day of
summer! What is it? Wouldn't you like to know? You'll just have to wait
and find out!

Well, okay, I _guess_ I can give you a clue. But I'm not going to make
it too easy, that's for sure! Let's just say it has something to do with
higher bandwidth allocations on each and every plan. Mmmm, maybe that's
too easy actually. I take that back. Instead, let's just say it has
something to do with 5 Gigabytes. What specifically, I will not say!
Like I said, you'll just have to wait until spring is through sprunging
to find out!

Speaking of Summer, I can't help but think we're right at the beginning
of a summer rally in the stock market. I mean, here we are with the
NASDAQ at 1562, a level we haven't seen since September. If that's not
oversold, I don't know what is! By the end of the month I think we'll
definitely be looking at NASDAQ 2000. You heard it here first!

The only reason the market is so low right now is the potential scandal
unfolding at Tyco. I think that's overblown for sure though, we're
definitely through with any Enron-like scandals in corporate earnings. I
mean, what company could possibly hide any more accounting misdeeds
after what happened in Houston? Oh and on a completely unrelated note,
I think WorldCom would be a great stock to pick up right now. After all,
you're getting an international telecom blue chip for around $1 a share!

2. Mailing List Bounce Auto-Remove!

One problem with writing a newsletter so early in the month, especially
after just sending one so late in the previous month, is that the
announcements all have to be about features we WILL be adding in June,
rather that ones we've already added! So you'll just have to read about
all these great improvements, and then sit and wait with baited breath..

So anyway, here's another one for you to bait your breath on. This month
we'll be adding a new feature to our mailing list software (NOT the
discussion list software, which I believe already has this feature) to
make your lives easier!

We're going to start tracking bounced emails whenever you send a message
to your list, and then use that information to automatically unsubscribe
bad email addresses! Of course you can choose how many bounces need to
happen before an address gets removed. Just go to the "edit" area for the
mailing list in our "Mail > Mailing Lists" section of our web panel! The
default is 5, but you can set it from 1 to 10 or even turn it off
altogether. This new feature should result in a more accurate feel for
how many people are _really_ on your mailing list, as well as cutting
down the bounced messages load for our server a little bit. We hope you
like the new feature! There won't be an announcement about it when it
comes out, so just go check the mailing list area for it sometime in
mid-to-late June!

You know, all that predicting and WorldCom stuff in the last section got
me thinking about World _Cup_! Although I'm not really a super soccer
fan myself, I can't help but throw in my own bold predictions for how
this year's tournament is going to turn out. Despite the home field
advantage, I really can't see the asian teams even making it to the
second round. I just think the perennial power-houses are the way to go.
Despite France's freak first game lost to Senegal, I still think they've
got a really good shot for a repeat. The only other team that looks good
to me is Argentina, who easily beat Nigeria 1-0 in their opener. You
know what? I'm so bullish on France's chances, I'm going to go put a
thousand bucks on them right now. I'd recommend you do too.

3. MailDir Migration!

Another thing we'll be working on this month is finally completing our
mail migration for all customers! We've already moved about half of you
guys to MailDir and Postfix last month, and the rest should easily be
done by July. I forsee no problems or mail interruptions of any kind.

Once it's done, that'll mean even MORE stability for all our e-mail
services. All at no cost to you! What a deal, I can hardly wait until
it happens!

Speaking of sports, it'd be weird if I prognosticated about the World
Cup (I usually care nothing about soccer) but didn't say a thing
about the NBA finals (basketball is the sport of the gods). I know the
conventional thinking all around is that the Lakers are going to make
short work of the Nets. Well, consider this: the Lakers just squeaked
by the Kings in overtime in game seven, whereas the Nets have had
several days rest after beating the Celtics. The Celtics in fact were
handily defeated by the Nets, and the Celtics beat the Lakers in both
of the teams meetings this season. Hmmmm... do you see where I'm coming
from? Also, Shaq has just been getting hammered this whole season and I
wouldn't be surprised if an injury takes him out of a game or two in the
finals. Let's just say I'm putting another $1,000 on the Nets in six.
I'd recommend you do the same.

4. Higher Precision For Auto-responder Timing!

One final little feature we'll be adding this month has to do with the
auto-responder feature. You remember how recently we added the ability
for you to set a start and end day for auto-responders (like for going
on vacation or something)? Well, now you can also specify the TIME your
auto-responder starts and ends. So like you could start auto-responding
at 5pm on a Friday and end at 9am on Monday if you wanted! This feature
should be live in time for you to set an auto-responder that starts at
2002-06-14 17:00:00 and ends on 2002-06-17 09:00:00. Of course, the way
things look between India and Pakistan right now, I wouldn't bet too
much on there even BEING a June 17th; at least not one where people are
more concerned about auto-responders than fall-out shelters.

5. DHSOTM

The DreamHost Site Of The Month winner for June 2002 is quite clearly:

http://www.2amphotography.com/

A site dedicated not to "2 AMP Hotography" like I thought at first, but
rather to "2 AM Photography"! If you don't know what that means, then
you're be a great candidate to go visit right now! Ever if you already
get it, you should still go visit so you can see what _specific_ photos
taken at 2 AM there are!

########################################################################

See you all in July (when I'm several thousand dollars richer!)
Josh!
