DreamHost now have some more info about the new status page in their blog.

The new status page is replacing the old announcement system in the panel and is equally replacing the email notifications of announcements.

Info from the Control Panel:

Decommissioned!
The old announcement system has been decommissioned!

From now on, ALL DreamHost announcements will be made through the newly revamped (off-network) status page and announcement blog:

http://www.dreamhoststatus.com/

We will also no longer be sending email notifications of announcements.. if you'd like to keep up on changes and problems at DreamHost, you can subscribe to the RSS feed (or just visit the site)!

You may also choose to only subscribe to rss feeds of certain categories via links all along the right side. Cool!

Email announcements were just getting too cumbersome (hundreds of thousands of messages, can't send email about email problems, junk-mail filters, etc..) and we thought a blog with rss feeds would be, like, so web 2.0 of us.

Thank you for your understanding!
The Happy DreamHost RSS-Announcement-ing Team!

I got an announcement rather soon, and i do beleive that Dreamhost uses a external program/service that can push out 100,000 emails almost instantly.

Paul - The last email I got from DreamHost Announcement Team was about a "fairly major network outage" Wednesday the 12th. The issue was instantly reported on the old status page, but I didn't get the email announcement before 35 hours later.

I think the problem is that you can hardly push out more than 100.000 emails (my guess) any faster, and that's why DreamHost is starting to use the blog and rss feeds more actively.

We can both agree on it's a great idea, and I believe it will result in more timely announcements.

And thus far it has proved useless. Last night when a large portion of their system was suffering outages, there was nothing said about it on the status page (I'm sure you got the email). Maybe because they were trying to do both things at the same time - finalizing the status page and fixing things.

I do however think that this is a great idea, as long as they use it!
